Woven baskets, trays and bowls such as this hand woven Buka Tray from Papua New Guinea provide us with a link to the natural world and a connection to a more natural lifestyle at home.
The Buka Trays are the absolute best for entertaining. They are so helpful and practical when you are running bits to and from the table. They also add a great textural layer once they land on the table. They are very strong and stable, so you won’t get the wobbles once you load these trays up with glassware, cutlery, ceramics and more.
I use one tray in the kitchen as my everyday tray. The woven tight weave is very forgiving when it comes to spills. I have a habit of overflowing cups of tea on my trays and you can’t see any of the spills on my tray due to the natural fibres.
I then have a couple in the kitchen which I use for decorative purposes. I have them hung onto the wall in a group of three. The handmade patterns look so impressive and artful as you can really see all the details when the trays are hung like a piece of art.
I then have another one on my coffee table which holds my collection of old seashells. It just makes sense to hold natural objects like seashells in another natural object, like the woven tray.
The weavers of Papua New Guinea are renowned for their basket-weaving techniques and the practice of basket making has evolved into an art.
The patterns are inspired by the surrounding environment, lineage and life of the weaver.
