The Buka Bowl

Woven baskets, trays and bowls such as this hand woven Buka Bowl from Papua New Guinea provide us with a link to the natural world and a connection to a more natural lifestyle at home.

The woven bowl itself is a very versatile form. I use mine to store fresh fruit, which I leave out on the table, as it looks so attractive and abundant sitting there. I also have another one which sits on my coffee table. This one holds the unsightly remote controls for the TV and speakers, and disguises the everyday bits which might be floating around like folded newspapers, tea light candles and matches.

The weavers of Papua New Guinea are renowned for their basket-weaving techniques and the practice of basket making has evolved into an art.

The Buka Bowl pairs beautifully with The Buka Tray and The Collection of Sea Shells.

The patterns are inspired by the surrounding environment, lineage and life of the weaver.
