‘Ghost Gums’ is one of my most loved photographic prints - it’s classic Australia, but in a deeply beautiful way. I photographed this print while on the road in country Victoria.

I remember it was winter and I was staying in a freezing cold cheap motel on the outskirts of a small country town. I had set my alarm for 3.30am so I could be on the road and within the landscape by sunrise. It was hard getting up, it was so cold.

I was on the hunt for some early morning landscapes and in my mind I was looking for golden light, soft yet strong, the sort of light that comes with a new day. I find when I’m looking for landscapes to photograph I always have to listen to my instincts, as describing exactly what I’m looking for is near impossible - until you feel it. And that’s exactly what happened with ‘Ghost Gums’.

I was driving the hire car and glanced over to the right of the road and got a feeling something was in that part of the bush, the light seemed very beautiful. I thought to myself ‘Should I turn back? Will I? No, I will!’. Nothing worse than photographers regret. So I threw at U turn and went back, grabbed my camera and walked into the bush.

I ended up jumping a couple of fences and crossing a railway line until this moment unfolded in front of me. The silvery tones of this stunning old gumtree, with that morning light I had hoped for, illuminating the feathery grasses was something special. ‘Ghost Gums’ is available in my shop in 5 different sizes.
