Australian Summer’ is one of those prints of mine which I have a deep love for. Usually with my work I’m out in the landscape, or as us photographers call it ‘out in the field’, following my eye and instincts to shoot my print collections.

However, with 'Australian Summer' I had this desire to capture an iconic vista that connected both the bush and the beach in one frame, with quintessential Australian undertones. I had scribbled down drawings in my notebook of what I was after.

I knew what sort of emotion I wanted to stir and I could see the image so clearly in my imagination, though finding it in real life was harder. I even went on a road trip down the east coast of Australia where capturing this image was at the forefront of my mind. Alas, I came close, but nothing which got my heart racing.

Driving on the highway back up from down south I started to think about home and the island and what I was missing most about it. I often do this, I think about the landscape and how it makes me feel when I’m away from it.

I realised there was one spot that I had been meaning to explore and hadn’t just yet. The closer I drove to home the more I started to realise that this unexplored pocket could actually be 'the spot'. Where the bush meets the beach and you can see the fizzing waves lapping in the distance.

And sure enough, it was! I took my Mum for a walk with my camera and we found this spot together. I was pretty emotional shooting this print, as in that moment everything I had been searching for was right there in my camera, that dappled Australian light, an odd number of thin tall trees and a beautiful vista out to the sea. ‘Australian Summer’ comes in 4 sizes in my print shop and I actually live with the extra large size in our living room. This pairs beautifully with 'Afternoon Sun'
