When we first moved into our mid century home on the mainland I noticed a hedge outside two of the bedroom windows. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but then as the air turned cooler, like it is now, the hedge started blooming with all these pink camellia flowers.

It was such a wonderful surprise. The previous owners who had the house for over 50 years must have planted camellias outside each of their daughters bedroom windows. So when I was creating this sentimental photograph ’Secret Garden' I had the essence of childhood on my mind.

Those innocent and endless days of playing in the garden with a neighbourhood friend or sibling, running barefoot on the damp grass of the backyard, to the sound of high pitched laughter and squeals.

Curious little fingers discovering blooming camellia buds, picking and feeling the velvety petals while playing make believe. Those days always felt abundant, as though they would go on forever, such ordinary moments, but once they were lived they were gone forever.

This extra large sized print became the hero piece of Edie's room.
